Calamus Root: A Taurus / Gemini Herb

Calamus Root is also known as Sweet Flag, Gladden, Myrtle Flag and Wiikenh (pronounced Wee-kay)

It is associated with the element of water, the feminine and the Zodiac sign Taurus and Gemini but it also excellent for those born in the first 10 days of Gemini. Traditionally it has been used as a muscle relaxant, reduces anxiety, helps with indigestion, gastritis, gas/bloating, is an appetite suppressant, it induces sweating (which is good for detoxification), and has been used for rheumatoid arthritis.

For Native Traditional purposes it is a powerful smudge for sweat lodge ceremonies. A piece of fresh root is placed onto the hot stones, the smoke that is produced is very cleansing and detoxifying. It has also been used for healing elixirs, smoking blends and added to tobacco. Wiikenh is traditionally used as a chewing medicine to blend with saliva and enzymes in the mouth.
