The Buddha and Enlightenment.
The Buddha acts as an inspiration to those who seek enlightenment. It is for this reason that having him in your sacred space may help you determine your path through this life in order to reach Nirvana.
In Eastern culture and Buddhist religious groups, the Buddha is not treated as an idol or a form of worship. He represents the likeness of a human who is extremely enlightened. The Buddha is not deified in any type of tradition. This includes ones that are considered to be Buddhist in nature. The Buddha acts as more of an inspiration point for a higher level of enlightenment.
A Buddha is one who has attained Bodhi. Bodhi means wisdom, an ideal state of intellectual and ethical perfection. This is known to be achieved by man through purely human means.
The term Buddha literally means “enlightened one, a knower.” Buddhists believe that a Buddha is born in each aeon of time. Our Buddha—the sage Gotama who attained enlightenment under the bo tree at Buddha Gaya in India—was the seventh in the succession.
